he offshore fishing village of Frenchboro will host the 47th annual Frenchboro Lobster Dinner on Saturday, August 8, 2009. The annual event held on the banks of Lunt Harbor features a beautiful boat ride and some of the best lobster in the world. Highlighting this year’s festival will be the local country rock band Boots Murphy and the Heels and storyteller and author Rebecca Rule.

Boots Murphy and the Heels, featuring lead singer and Frenchboro resident, Megan Murphy, will make its third appearance at the festival and will perform both classic and contemporary country music as well as classic rock.

Rule lives in New Hampshire and summers in Franklin, Maine. Rule performs throughout New Hampshire and parts of New England, has written several books, including “Live Free and Eat Pie.” She has also released several CDs.

Frenchboro, located on Long Island eight miles from Mount Desert Island, is one of just a handful of year-round island fishing villages remaining on the coast of Maine. Established as a community in the 1820s, the island now has a population of about 70. Island attractions and activities include great walking trails, breathtaking vistas of the Atlantic and outer islands, and the Frenchboro Historical Society Museum and Gift Shop.

The dinner includes Maine lobster, chicken salad, hot dogs, cole slaw, homemade pies, potato chips and soda. Dinner will be served, rain or shine, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds benefit the 120-year-old Outer Long Island Congregational Church.
The Maine State Ferry (passengers only) will make a special Frenchboro Lobster Festival run, leaving Bass Harbor at 9 a.m. and then leaving Frenchboro for the return trip at 3:30 p.m. Ferry tickets (round trip) are $5 and can only be purchased the day of the event only outside the Bass Harbor Ferry Terminal.
